Born Team

When did NCAA baseketball tournament go to 65 teams and how in the world does that even work?

Saw a headline in newpaper saying 65 teams chosen. When did it go from 64 to 65 and how does that even work? Not a multiple of 4.

  1. Two low-seeded teams (typically teams with poor records that qualified by winning their conference tournament championships) compete in the "opening round" game to determine which will advance into the first round of the tournament, with the winner advancing to play the top seed in one of the four regions. The opening Round game was added in 2001 and has been played in University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio each subsequent year. Even though the opening round is technically considered part of the tournament, it is often referred to as a "play-in" game.
  2. They have a "play in" game now for the 64th spot. There will be a game Tuesday and the winner of this game (Morehead St vs. Alabama State) will receive the 64th spot in the tournament field. They switched to this system a couple or so years back. I guess to give more teams an opportunity to make into the big dance.
  3. It came up with this system a few years ago. two teams which are just lucky enough to even play to get into the tourney play a game to become a 16 seed and go against a top seed. Odds are highly unlikely the 'winner" of this one game playoff will do anything, with just the satisfaction, joy, experience to get to The Dance. I seriously doubt a 16 seed will ever beat a # 1 seed. To entice fans, and get schools the chance to play, I personally think a more realistic way of getting to The Big Dance, should be arranged. Perhaps teams on "the bubble" can play a round robin and that winner can go in, and then a more realistic chance of upsetting a top seed. These unknown schools from weak conferences dont have much of a chance.
  4. Actually, I think that all of the conference champions are guaranteed a first round game. The play in teams are hand picked teams that didn't win their conference.
  5. Not sure when the play-in game was added but the 64th and 65th teams play on Tuesday, and the winner becomes the final 16 seed. This creates room for one more at-large team to get in while the junk teams play. There is a lobby for this to be expanded to 68 teams, creating play-in games for all 4 16 seeds.
