What do you think about the influence of sports teams in school systems?

What do you think about the influence of sports teams in schools? Do you think there is too much influence on sports teams instead of academics? Or do you think they balance out well? 1. sports are bigger then academics
2. I like my school, I really do, but football sometimes outweighs academics in the fall. We have a policy about having to get and do makeup work when gone for sports, and during XC the coach made sure we did that. Team participants have to have good grades and good behavior as well. Sports are good at school tho because they get kids pumped up for their school and give them a tad school spirit, at least I think they do. Cross Country helps me let off some steam, so it's nice. Sorry I rambled...
3. Well, at my school, they have to balance each other out. You need to have a 2.0 to play any sport, and if it drops below that, you are suspended from the team until you get it up consistently for 25 days. So I like the system.
